Piatella: the new bubble hash refinement technique

piatella resin
Temps de lecture 4 min

Contents :

Piatella is a cold refinement technique for full melt hash, developed in Barcelona, which aims to enhance texture and aromas.

After Live Rosin and Static Shift, this is the new trend in high-end hash.

But unlike the other two types of resin mentioned, piatella is not a new extraction technique: it is a refining method. A maturation process that aims to give the hash an exceptionally pure taste, without equal.

Want to learn more about what this technique can do and how to do it at home? We'll tell you everything!

What is piatella?

Origins and definitions

Piatella (or piatela) is a hash of Spanish origin, developed in the Catalan capital of Barcelona. With the rise of authorized Cannabis Social Clubs in recent years, the city has become one of the hotspots of cannabis culture in Europe.
It was in one of these iconic clubs, Uncle's Farm, that piatella was born. Its creation is attributed to a certain ZIO, who became known as "Don Piatella."

You will probably think that this nickname sounds more Italian than Spanish, and you would probably be right. "Don" is clearly an Italian title, while the name "piatella" comes from the Italian word piatto, which means "plate."

Although this hash was created in Barcelona, its name suggests that its creator may be of Italian origin.

In any case, piatella is not, strictly speaking, a new type of hash, but rather a refining technique applied to full melt hash. It is a specific maturation method that aims to enhance the aromatic qualities and texture of the final product.

Features

The first characteristic of piatella is, of course, its purity. It is created from the highest quality hash possible, exclusively sourced from premium full melt.

The second characteristic is its taste and flavor. Once extracted, this exceptional hash is refined, in other words, it undergoes a maturation period. This process enhances its aromatic profile: the terpenes and flavonoids, present in large quantities, can then fully reveal the richness and complexity of their flavors.
Of course, the final taste of piatella depends directly on the full melt used, and therefore on the flowers selected for its production.

Finally, the third major characteristic is its texture. The refining process gives full melt a soft, malleable consistency, almost like jelly or butter. It has a surprisingly pleasant texture, which has become one of the distinctive features of piatella.

What changes with the piatella?

The refining technique does not alter, or only very slightly alters, the chemical structure or cannabinoid content of the hash used before it is transformed into piatella. The potency and type of sensations will therefore remain broadly similar to those of the original hash, before refining.

  • On the other hand, the maturation of piatella significantly alters the consumer experience: it makes it sweeter, rounder, and more refined. This evolution in the aromatic profile and texture can thus influence the overall sensation, offering a more subtle and harmonious tasting experience.

    Preparing the piatella

    Ingredients and equipment:

    • Full melt resin
    • A vacuum sealer + a bag
    • An airtight jar
    • A refrigerator set between 4 and 10 degrees

Step 1: Obtain full melt hash

    full melt resin

Full melt hash, which some call 6-star hash, owes its name to its main characteristic: to the eye and to the touch, this high-quality resin does not have the grainy or foamy appearance found in many other types of hash. As its name suggests, this hash looks completely melted.

It can be extracted from fresh or frozen flowers using dry extraction or ice water extraction. Regardless of the method chosen, full melt remains a high-end hash that requires particularly careful attention.

It is a rare and expensive product because it is difficult to obtain, even using industrial processes.
If you want to make your own piatella, we recommendbuying your full melt hash directly.

Step 2: Place the full melt hash in a vacuum

    vacuum-processed full melt resin

For this step, you will need a vacuum sealer. Simply place your hash in a suitable bag, then put it in the machine to extract the air.

Once the operation is complete, you will have a hash that is perfectly conditioned for aging.

Step 3: Cure the hash in the refrigerator

    cold-curing resin

Then place your vacuum-sealed hash in an additional airtight container, such as a glass jar, and store it in the refrigerator, ideally at a temperature between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius. The curing process takes between 1 and 3 months on average.

How do I know when my piatella is ready?

To determine whether your piatella is ready, nothing really beats experience. But if this is your first time, there are a few signs you can look for.

When all these characteristics are present, all that remains is to wait another week or so to be sure:

    1. The hash has a matte, uniform appearance: no marbling, no lighter or darker areas, and no shiny areas.
    2. There is no longer any condensation or micro-droplets on the walls of the bag.
    3. When touched through the bag, the texture should be compact and firm, without being rock hard.
